ONEHUNGA
a
community with heart!
From its
earliest beginnings, Onehunga, one of the oldest
settlements in the region, has occupied a special
place in Auckland's history.
The northern
shore of the Manukau Harbour was an ideal place
for a trading port, and the village quickly grew
up around the waterfront. From this
site, the pioneers set up trading with Maori. Industries
such as timber milling and shipbuilding flourished,
to be followed by others, and from the mid-1800s
many substantial homes were built, some of which
can still be seen today. Created a
Borough in its own right in 1877, a status which
lasted until amalgamation under Auckland City in
1989, Onehunga has enjoyed the benefits of a wide
range of well-administered amenities, together
with a strong sense of community.
Schools,
churches, parks, the swimming pool complex, cafés and restaurants, a gymnasium, the library
and Community Centre, great local theatre, easy
access to the waterfront - all these and more have
attracted many families looking for affordable
suburban living, yet with easy access to the city.
Proximity to the airport is also a plus, and in
addition makes Onehunga an ideal first port-of-call
for visitors arriving here.

Onehunga
Mall, the town's main street, runs the length of the suburb
from north to south. Here and in the neighbouring
streets, you'll find a huge variety of shops and
businesses, not least in the recently extended
DressSmart complex, home to a vast range of designer
outlets and specialty stores. A flourishing
Business Association meets regularly, with the
aim of developing and promoting businesses in the
town. And that's
where we came in! The Onehunga
Community News was originally founded in 1992 by
the Onehunga Business Association as part of its
Mainstreet Programme to provide both a focus for
the community and a forum for news and views.
From
these small beginnings the News has gone from
strength to strength, and in 2000 this in-house
publication of the Association was sold to a private
company, The Auckland Newsletter Co. Sheryn Werner,
owner and Editor since 2003, has since built up
the Onehunga Community News into the many-paged,
colour edition that is delivered to 12,000 business and residential letter boxes and selected outlets, in and around Onehunga, Oranga, Royal Oak, Mangere Bridge and Hillsborough. And in this web-site, we are now committed to bringing
the same standard of news and information about
this great little community to YOU!
