A weighty award

Congratulations to One Tree Hill College old boy, David Liti, for his amazing achievements at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He won Gold in the 105kg+ Weightlifting competition, set a new Commonwealth Games record, and was chosen out of all the competing athletes to receive the prestigious David Dixon Award for sportsmanship.

This award is given to an athlete who has demonstrated excellence in their performance at the Commonwealth Games, shown fair play, and their overall contribution to their team’s participation. After the medal ceremony, he offered to assist his main rival and silver medal winner,  Lauititi Lui, who was in a wheelchair after injuring himself in the final.

When he returned back to Auckland after the Games, students from his old school were there to greet him with a rousing haka. Principal Nick Coughlan, who accompanied the welcoming party, says, “David was always such an outgoing and enthusiastic young man. He was a well respected student who, as a Prefect, led from the front with care and compassion.

“He was a talented rugby player, who was one of a number of students who were introduced to the One Tree Hill College weightlifting programme, which has now produced age-group champions, national champions, three  Commonwealth Games representatives, and now a Commonwealth Games Champion.

As a college and community we are so proud of David’s achievements. He is returning to the college to open our new $40,000 weight and fitness room next term.”
