Help keep our owl and raise money for a good cause

Our community has very grown fond of  the giant owl, GOWLdi, perched outside St Peter’s Church on Onehunga Mall, and some are not too keen to see him leave his spot. Unless we take action, he is going to be auctioned off on the 29th of May, with proceeds donated to The Child Cancer Foundation (CCF).

Forty-seven giant owls, and 60 mini owlet sculptures have popped up around Auckland, as part of The Haier Big Hoot public art trail. People of all ages have taken part in the hunt, and Onehunga is home to four of the feathered figures.

The Onehunga Business Association (OBA) has come to the rescue, and is working to raise enough money to place the winning bid at auction. A Give-a Little page has been set up for the task at hand, with the hopes of securing our nocturnal friend a permanent home in the town centre. The OBA is not relying solely on public fundraising for the purchase, and has put aside a small budget as part of the bid.

OBA Event and Communications manager, Amanda Wellgreen, believes GOWLdi will be a top favourite at auction. She commented, “he has become a popular addition to Onehunga Mall. It has been fantastic to see locals and visitors interested, and we have received a lot of positive feedback.  Ultimately this is a charity fundraiser, so the more money we can put towards the purchase the better result for the CCF. “We hope the people of Onehunga can show their support.”

However if unsuccessful, Amanda hopes to use the funds raised  to commission GOWLdi's creator ,Rachel Silver, to create another stunning piece of public art for Onehunga Mall.
