Auckland City Mission appeal - Onehunga Primary School helps out

The Auckland City Mission is suffering a shortage of food parcels, following a 28 %  spike in demand compared to this time last year. After a plea for donations was made to the public, Onehunga Primary School jumped at the chance to help.

Once the request was shared on their website, close to 100 cans and food items were dropped off to the school office in less than a week. Siblings Maya Mendis (6) and Shaehan Mendis (7) were happy to bring items from home to add to the collection. Shaehan commented, “if everyone gives a little bit each, we can help out a lot of people.”

The level of generosity was no surprise to principal Viki Holley, saying, “Onehunga has long been a supportive community - and this school is no different. Some families don’t have much, but they still want to help. It is definitely humbling to be part of this school and the wider community. They are by far the most caring.”

Since March, the Auckland City Mission has provided 3,253 emergency food packages to needy families and individuals - including 49,417 cans of food. The growing number has the organisation concerned about the upcoming winter months, as requests for food rises during this time, with low income families battling higher electricity bills and heating costs.

June is also their One Can - Two Can annual appeal week, which encourages schools, churches and businesses to collect non-perishable food or funds. The official drive runs from Monday the 18th of June to Friday the 29th of June, with distribution drivers available during July to pick up larger donations.
