Volunteers step up for Onehunga Community Patrol

Nine new volunteers have put their hands up to be part of Onehunga’s Community Patrol team.  They are part of a thirty-strong crew, who can be seen regularly out and about the local streets in their bright yellow vests. ‘eyes and ears’ in the community.

Community Patrols of New Zealand (CPNZ) is a national organisation which was formed in 2001. There are more than 5,000 volunteers in over 150 affiliated community patrols throughout the country. Its main aim is to enhance community safety, and although it is a separate entity from the Police, the CPNZ works closely with them, acting as extra eyes and ears.

To join CPNZ, you need to be at least 18 years-old and have a clean driving licence and police record – the police carry out a vetting process for everybody. In the CPNZ Onehunga patrol, you are rostered on for three hours a month, although some patrollers do more.

One of the new crew members, Sonnyeo, who grew up on Onehunga’s “main street”, is in his twenties and has a background in security. He says he is a keen advocate for doing something in the community; as well as being involved in CPNZ, he runs a community development initiative, where he and other volunteers provide free crowd management services to charity events. Lou, another new volunteer,  is new to Onehunga. She lived overseas in the USA, Europe and Hawaii for many years, before returning to New Zealand 20 years ago. She says now she is retired, she, “felt like giving back something to the community. To help out.”

Although the Onehunga CPNZ volunteers come from all walks of life and different backgrounds, they have one thing in common -  they want to prevent crime and give back to our community.
