Waikaraka Speedway – back to square one?

Onehunga’s Waikaraka Speedway’s future is back to square one, with the surprise announcement in June that Western Springs Speedway would be relocating to Colin Dale Motorsport Park in Wiri.

Two months ago, Onehunga Community News wrote about the uncertainties around Waikaraka Park’s future; many aspects were up in the air due to external issues yet to be resolved.  However, at the time, we understood that Regional Facilities Auckland (RFA) had been showing interest in a merger between Western Springs and Waikaraka speedway tracks. Apparently, negotiations had been taking place for some time, and concept design drawings had even been drafted.

With this in mind, it came as a huge shock to many when the announcement came out of the blue Western Springs’ speedway would move to Wiri, and not Onehunga. Maungakiekie Tamaki MP Denise Lee says, “Waikaraka Speedway has had the rug pulled out from under its feet. I am incredibly disappointed. It’s time the speedway got some recognition.”

Meanwhile, Waikaraka Speedway is once again left to contend with its uncertain future. Maungakiekie-Tamaki Councillor Josephine Bartley says she is working hard to ensure the speedway receives financial help. “My thoughts are that Regional Facilities Auckland should still invest in Waikaraka Par, so I’m working with the Local Board about how we lobby for this to happen.”
