It’s rocket science

An innovative charity that provides scientific kits to schools has received a funding boost, thanks to a grant of $2,300 from the Mount Roskill Kiwanis. The House of Science (HOS) charitable trust was founded in 2013 by CEO Chris Duggan, a biochemist and former secondary school science teacher. Her vision is simple - to raise scientific literacy and connect the scientific community.

Each region has its own science library of resources; for a small membership fee, schools can order a kit online and it will be delivered to the school. All of the kits, which cater for Years 1 to 8, are fully aligned to the National Curriculum and contain at least five hands-on experiments.  They are developed with the help of science organisations like NIWA, and the McDiarmid Institute. There are over 30 topics, which include Electric Future, Dem Bones, Fossil Fuels, Nano Chem and Rocket World.

HOS relies on its volunteers, one of whom is Hillsborough resident Jess Singh. She is setting up a HOS branch in West Auckland, but says, “Once West Auckland is up and running we will be able to roll this resource out to the rest of Auckland.” She applied for a grant from the Kiwanis and says she is “really pumped” to get funding from them.

Kiwanis is a global organisation dedicated to serving the needs of children. Members of all ages attend regular meetings, organise outings, and most importantly give back to local and international communities. The Kiwanis Club of Mount Roskill,  which includes several Onehunga locals, meets at the Onehunga RSA every first and third Tuesday of the month. Every year, members can be seen helping out with the Onehunga Santa and ANZAC parades. They are also involved with many other areas of fundraising and sponsorship which include organising meals at the Ronald McDonald House, sponsoring an annual speech contest for local secondary schools, and sending containers of donated resources to the Pacific Islands.
